"My first piece of advice is if you really want something, just go for it. Take courage and have confidence in yourself."

Can you introduce yourself and provide some background info?

I'm originally from San Simon, Pampanga and went to college at Baliuag University where I took up accountancy. I was an active member and officer of the student organization Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) during college. I also graduated as the valedictorian in high school which allowed me to qualify for a full academic scholarship for college.

After graduating in 2018, I passed the board exams that October and started working at Deloitte Philippines in November. I've been with Deloitte for over 4 years now and progressed from being a junior associate to senior associate, had a one year secondment at Google Philippines, and am now a tax assistant manager.

What factors did you consider before choosing Deloitte?

When we visited firms for sponsorships, I liked Deloitte's work environment and ambience; I felt at peace. The people also seemed enjoyable to work with. Location was important too since I would be commuting from the province. During my first interview, the open roles were for audit but I really wanted to get into tax. It was a rollercoaster experience but it worked out in the end when they offered me a tax role.

How did you find out about Deloitte's job openings?

I was contacted directly by a Deloitte recruiter right after I passed the board exams. This was thanks to my involvement in the student organization JPIA which gave them access to my information. The recruiter scheduled an interview just a few days after calling me.

What was Deloitte's application and interview process like?

The process involved an initial HR screening, then endorsement to the service line managers for another round of interviews. It was memorable for me because I got lost on my way to the office, being unfamiliar with the area. I arrived late but the interviews went smoothly. However, I was only informed later on that the roles open at the time were for audit. I really wanted to get into tax so it was a rollercoaster waiting to hear back about a potential tax role.

How would you describe your first few days and onboarding experience at Deloitte?

As a new joiner, I was provided an orientation program to familiarize myself with the company policies, systems, and processes. There is also a Junior to Senior (J2S) training program that helps new hires transition smoothly into their roles. The people were very supportive during my onboarding which helped me adjust quickly.

As a tax assistant manager, what are your main duties and responsibilities?

I manage engagements and directly connect with clients. I look after my team members and manage their work and development. I still review deliverables before sending them to clients. We handle tax compliance, advisory, tax applications, refunds, audits, etc. I'm still adjusting to the role since I was recently promoted.

What kind of training programs does Deloitte offer for employee development?

Deloitte provides many learning and development opportunities. When I got promoted to senior, I underwent J2S training. More recently when I became an assistant manager, I attended the Senior to Manager (S2M) seminars. These involve 2-day workshops focused on building management and leadership skills. There are also regular tax seminars and training to stay updated on regulations. As consultants, we are expected to keep enhancing our expertise.

How demanding is the work as a tax professional? Do you have a good work-life balance?

The tax profession will always be demanding and stressful, whether you're in public or private practice. Accountants tend to be busy, especially during peak periods like tax season. Right now we have a hybrid work arrangement - 2 days in the office and the rest remote. Managers also have flexible hours. I feel this provides a good balance, although when it's busy season work takes up most of my time. Having the annual holiday downtime and other incentives help maintain motivation despite the high pressure.

What are some of the best benefits you get working at Deloitte?

The yearly holiday time-off is a nice benefit, providing some downtime before the busy season starts. The company also gives free meals, massages, and team outings during our busy season. I appreciate the supportive work culture where your colleagues really help each other out. The learning opportunities are also invaluable given how regulations and technology frequently change in our profession.

What have been some of the highlights or most enjoyable parts about working at Deloitte?

Getting seconded to Google Philippines for a year-long engagement was definitely a career highlight. I've enjoyed the collaborative culture at Deloitte and the events organized by our tax team. The outings we have as a group after completing busy season are something I look forward to each year. Having such motivated yet fun teammates has made my time here memorable.

Do you have any advice to students interested in a similar career path?

My first piece of advice is if you really want something, just go for it. Take courage and have confidence in yourself. Secondly, have an attitude of gratitude. Appreciate the positives and little things in life. And lastly, believe that hard work prepares you for greater things in the future. Working hard pays off so stay committed if you want a meaningful career.
