The not-so-good bits: Fresh grads may find it difficult to land a job at DHL Philippines. The company seems to prefer experienced professionals for vacant positions.

The DHL Philippines story

DHL Philippines became operational in 1971, two years after the multinational logistics company was established in Germany.

By 1996, DHL launched the Asia-Pacific hub in Manila. The company also planned to establish a backup hub and sorting center at the Clark Air Base in Pampanga.

In 2015, DHL Philippines spent Php79.2 million on a South Service Center in Las Piñas City. The major hub serves as the eighth service center in the country. It supports the company’s shipping services for air, ocean, rail, and road freight.

DHL Philippines also provides local and international shipping for documents and parcels. Its logistics solutions comprise contract logistics, transport and distribution, and warehouse services.

The culture

Insiders described a comfortably fast-paced work environment at DHL. Young new hires with excellent customer service skills will find it easier to do their jobs.

In terms of work-life balance, employees have mixed opinions. Frontline workers, for example, should be willing to work overtime. Corporate employees usually work during regular business hours from Monday to Friday.

As there are a few entry-level opportunities, it also seems to be the case for career development. Some insiders shared that it’s difficult to achieve a promotion because of limited opportunities.

The competition

DHL Philippines’ local and foreign competitors include 2GO Express, GrabExpress, JRS Express, J&T Express, and Ninja Van.

Controversy

In 2017, the Supreme Court (SC) upheld a court ruling for DHL Philippines to pay Php30,000 in nominal damages. Rogel Ortiz filed a legal complaint in 1999 against his former employer for ‘unfair labor practice and illegal dismissal’.

Evidence proved that Ortiz neglected his clerical duties and habitually went home early to watch basketball games. The SC still instructed DHL Philippines to pay nominal damages, citing its ‘failure to abide by the statutory standards of procedural due process’.

Social contributions

In 2020, DHL Philippines donated a portion of delivery fees between November and December to Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children's Home.

The company has also been instrumental in the efficient delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to the country. In 2021, it delivered the first batch of Pfizer vaccines and diluents.

The vibe of the place

Fresh grads should prepare for a tedious yet engaging recruitment process at DHL Philippines. Once selected candidates get a job offer, they should prepare for a customer-centric culture.

In exchange for excellent performance, DHL Philippines rewards employees with lucrative benefits and perks

Recruitment Process

The recruitment process

Fresh grads should anticipate five recruitment stages to land a job at DHL Philippines. The company’s general hiring process involves an online application, phone and in-person interviews, an assessment center, and onboarding.

Online application

DHL Philippines prefers to receive online applications, with CVs and cover letters ideally in PDF format. The company may also require applicants to submit recommendation letters.

Phone interview

An HR representative contacts qualified candidates for a phone interview. It may last for at least 30 minutes. In certain situations, pre-screened applicants may speak with the HR manager during the interview.

Group or panel interviews

Previous applicants said that DHL Philippines holds interviews in groups. For instance, three graduate trainees may attend a panel interview at once. The panellists may consist of the hiring manager and two other bosses.

A usual interview starts with questions about a candidate’s CV before moving on to specific questions such as:

  • Why do you want to work for DHL Philippines?
  • Why should we hire you and not the other candidates in this group?

Assessment center

Like the phone interview, DHL Philippines may skip this round. Otherwise, the company will invite shortlisted candidates to complete a series of ‘practical challenges and team exercises’.

Onboarding

DHL Philippines may take 10 days on average to complete the recruitment process. The actual timeline depends on certain factors (eg COVID-19).

Remuneration & Career Growth

Remuneration

An operations agent at DHL Philippines earns Php16,000 on average per month. Interns may earn up to Php8,000 per month, depending on the program.

The company’s benefits package:

  • 20 days of vacation and paid time off
  • Annual bonuses
  • Dental and medical coverage
  • Employee discounts (eg special shipping rates)
  • Loans and miscellaneous allowance
  • Maternity and paternity leave
  • Monthly performance incentives

DHL Philippines also provides educational support to its employees. In 2013, the company launched the UPstairs scholarship program for qualified employees’ children.

Career prospects

DHL Philippines offers limited entry-level roles for fresh grads. On the bright side, the company welcomes anyone with a bachelor’s degree to work as an operations agent. Fresh grads should also have more than one year of driving experience to qualify for the job.

Operations agents handle administrative- and network-related tasks like processing inbound and outbound materials.

While there are scarce entry-level opportunities, the company offers local and international internships. These include the AIESEC Internship Program that lasts for at least six months.

Fresh grads should take note that DHL Philippines offers AIESEC internships on an as-needed basis. They have a better chance of joining the company as management trainees.
