The Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines story

P&G Philippines began in 1935 as the U.S.-based company’s first overseas subsidiary in the Far East. It’s also the second-oldest subsidiary in the world outside of North America.

More than 80 years later, P&G Philippines has become a trusted source of several consumer brands and products:

  • Ariel, Downy, and Tide
  • Gillette
  • Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Rejoice
  • Olay
  • Oral B
  • Pampers
  • Safeguard
  • Vicks

As a regional operating headquarters (ROHQ), P&G Philippines represents one-third of P&G companies in the world. More than 2,000 employees work at the general office in Taguig City and the manufacturing facility in Cabuyao, Laguna.

The culture

Fresh grads should anticipate a challenging workplace at P&G Philippines where significant responsibilities from Day 1 lead to high expectations. New hires should also expect a competitive environment, especially among those who are gunning for a promotion.

The biggest challenge for fresh grads, however, would be dealing with the pressure of meeting high expectations. Some insiders also cited long working hours as an impediment to work-life balance.

Despite the challenges, most employees agree that they get the right support from the right people. Many of them appreciate the guidance of managers and supervisors. While work can be hectic, it can also be construed as a productive workplace.

These factors allowed P&G Philippines to rank among the best employers in the country. In 2021, the company landed on the 47th spot in the Top 100 Graduate Employers in the Philippines.

The competition

P&G Philippines’ biggest competitors are Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Johnson & Johnson Philippines, and Unilever Philippines.

In 2020, the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) sided with P&G Philippines over a tax refund complaint. The company wanted to recover more than Php357 million of quarterly income payments to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

The CTA, however, only instructed the BIR to refund approximately Php332 million of tax payments. P&G Philippines was unable to show proof of balance for the company’s tax exemptions, hence the lower granted amount.

Social contributions

In 2021, P&G Philippines ramped up its Force for Good and SAFEWash programs for public health. The company donated more than Php100 million of products and facilities to promote proper handwashing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vibe of the place

Fresh grads should prepare for a simple yet thorough hiring process at P&G Philippines. Successful candidates must be ready to deal with a competitive and dynamic workplace.

In exchange for meeting or exceeding expectations, the company rewards employees with plenty of attractive perks and incentives.

Recruitment Process

P&G Philippines’ general recruitment process only involves four steps: application, assessment, interviews, and offer. While it’s straightforward, fresh grads must focus on the rigorous activities for the first three stages.

The company only accepts applications within a stated deadline. Fresh grads should then sign up for P&G Philippines’ job alerts to stay updated with the latest opportunities.

The best way to do so requires an account on the company’s careers site. Once applicants create an account, they must remember to do three things:

  1. Add details about their academic and educational background.
  2. Attach a CV with a file size not exceeding 5MB.
  3. Complete a questionnaire form.

Applicants can only attach up to two files (ie CV and cover letter). P&G Philippines accepts these files in PDF or Word format.

Online assessment

Most candidates take an online assessment that varies based on the job’s requirements. Some examples include fill-in-the-gap questions, memory quizzes, and multiple-choice tests.

P&G Philippines informs applicants about the assessment results within 30 days. Unsuccessful candidates should apply again after 12 months.

Shortlisted candidates should prepare for one-on-one or panel interviews that may last for at least 45 minutes.

The company may conduct in-person or virtual interviews depending on the circumstances. Previous candidates said that they answered behavioural- and situational-based questions.

P&G Philippines may extend a job offer within seven days, although the usual timeline could be longer. For instance, some applicants said that they got an offer after two months.

Remuneration & Career Growth

The usual salaries of interns at P&G Philippines may reach up to Php16,000 per month. Entry-level salaries range between Php19,000 and Php27,000 per month, depending on the job.

Many insiders said that the company provides flexible benefits. As an example, some employees can choose a cash bonus to spend on essential items. Other benefits include:

  • International Stock Ownership Plan and Stock Purchase Allowance
  • Flexible life and medical insurance plan
  • Flexible work arrangement (eg work from home)
  • Monthly allowances (eg wellness, travel)
  • Pension plan
  • Vacation and sick leave
  • Vibrant Living Program, Christmas Basket, and Service Awards

P&G Philippines also provides ‘Flexible Credits delivered every quarter’. The value of these credits increases based on an employee’s level. Employees also enjoy 3.5 months of taxable bonuses that are given every April, May, October, and December (prorated on the first year).

Career prospects

P&G Philippines believes that fresh grads can take on significant roles from Day 1 if they have the right qualifications and skills.  Aside from internships, fresh grads can explore a career in seven areas:

  1. Brand: consumer & market knowledge
  2. Brand: marketing/business management
  3. Finance & accounting
  4. Human resources
  5. Information technology (IT)
  6. Legal
  7. Sales

Some entry-level roles at the company include brand managers, chemists/laboratory analysts, HR process owners, IT associate managers, and sales key account managers.

P&G Philippines welcomes anyone with a bachelor’s or master’s degree to work as a brand manager or sales key account manager. Other roles like a chemist-laboratory analyst require a license and a degree in BS Chemistry.

Fresh grads with a degree in computer science, engineering, or IT can join the company as IT, associate managers. This job presents an opportunity to travel overseas.
