What's your job about?

SYKES is a digital marketing and customer service global outsourcer, providing customer-engagement services to Global 2000 companies. I joined as an HR Assistant for our Sourcing Department in 2019 and have now been promoted as an HR Associate for the same department. My main responsibilities include providing general HR-Sourcing support in areas of administration, logistics, documentation, generation, reporting of statistics and maintaining a database of sources of the talent pool.

What's your background?

I grew up living here in Metro Manila but my family is from a small town in Negros Oriental. I’ve always admired the hustle and bustle of the city but I also love going back home to my province at least once a year. Eventually, my family and I settled here in the Metro so I’ve spent most of my life in the city. I went to De La Salle – College of St. Benilde for my college education and graduated last 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management. If I’m being honest, I’ve never really seen myself working as an HR growing up. But I’ve grown to love the job from what I’ve experienced so far. In 2018, I had my internship with another BPO company under Recruitment. That experience was what made me realize that I want to focus on this specialization as an HR. By 2019, I applied for the position of HR Assistant at SYKES and thankfully, I got the job. I’ve been working in this company for 2 years now and I can attest to the fact that you work, learn and grown with SYKES. I was just recently promoted to an HR Associate and I’m continuously learning every day through this job.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I believe someone who has a background working in the BPO industry would have an advantage with this job. Luckily, I had my internship in this industry as well and that’s what led me to this career path. Having a degree in HR, Psychology or any business-related course would also help. But as long as you’re flexible, willing to learn and adapt to a fast-paced working environment, then you are definitely a fit for this job.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about my job is the training and calibration programs that we have. As I mentioned, here at SYKES we want our employees to work, learn and grow and that is the reality in this company. They offer mentoring and coaching sessions for all employees to really ensure that there is career growth no matter what path they’re in.

What are the limitations of your job?

The BPO industry is truly a fast-paced working environment. You need to be able to learn and adapt quickly as well as be flexible in terms of your work responsibilities. It was challenging for me to catch up at first and I found it a bit overwhelming at times. But eventually, like any job, you’ll be successful in this career path through hard work, dedication, and with the help and support of your mentors and supervisors.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Don’t worry too much about the future. You will find your way.
  • Focus on the learnings and don’t give too much importance to your GPA. It may help you get a job but learning from real-life experiences and application is very different from reading about it from a textbook.
  • Choose your internship program or company wisely. Make sure that you’re applying to companies that are aligned with your own career goals and personal values.
