Given that Emma upholds a non-hierarchical and team-centric structure, one fascinating aspect of my role is that I get to have the opportunity to coordinate, collaborate, and brainstorm with all Emmies across all development levels, ranging from the CEO to my fellow interns.

What's your job about?

In the sleep industry, Emma IS the standard for innovation and high-quality products. As part of the team, my role revolves around the meticulous collection, analysis, and interpretation of data related to our overall people experience. My responsibilities extend to actively assisting in ongoing organizational development projects and initiatives such as conducting research, analyzing reports, as well as the implementation of culture and change of management strategies.

I also take charge of organizing both global and regional events, company-wide discussions, and leadership meetings which fosters a sense of unity and open communication within the company. Collaboration and alignment are at the forefront of my role given that it requires close coordination with Emmies across all offices.

What's your background?

More than half of my academic journey unfolded within the walls of an all-girls school. From pre-school to high school, this environment became my second home, shaped my early experiences, and honed the person I am today. Change and stepping outside my comfort zone were not regular occurrences for me because the only significant change took place when I transitioned to college and took up Industrial Engineering. This course taught me how to push my personal boundaries because it offers diversity and flexibility, where I got to experience immersing myself in various fields ranging from operations, business development, marketing, HR, and accounting.

Each of my previous schools taught me invaluable life lessons when it comes to leadership. I have been a student leader throughout high school and college where I learned that leadership wasn't merely about giving orders; it was a lesson in understanding people, dealing with challenges, and delegating tasks efficiently. My engagement with various organizations as an officer added another layer to my growth. These experiences honed my skills in project management, securing partnerships, social media marketing, and negotiation.

Enter Emma—a chapter I never expected to be included in my story. The application process was a crucial and competitive process, plus, I was surrounded by a lineup of highly qualified candidates. Despite the competition, Emma believed in my capabilities, and saw my potential to contribute to the company. Five months into my journey with Emma, the challenges and opportunities I have experienced not only enhanced my professional growth but have played a crucial role in shaping my personal growth as well. Emma has been a catalyst for learning, growth, and unexpected possibilities, turning what initially seemed like a professional opportunity into a profound chapter of my life.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Definitely. People who have strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and proficiency in data interpretation, coupled with adaptability, a proactive mindset, and a talent for contributing to organizational development initiatives can certainly excel in this role. Effective communication is also a must-have, as it allows for successful collaboration with various teams and stakeholders. To successfully organize events, one must have excellent organizational skills and a dedication to promoting a positive work culture. While prior experience in human resources or organizational development can be beneficial, those with diverse backgrounds and a genuine passion for creating uplifting workplace environments possess the essential qualities to thrive in this role.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Given that Emma upholds a non-hierarchical and team-centric structure, one fascinating aspect of my role is that I get to have the opportunity to coordinate, collaborate, and brainstorm with all Emmies across all development levels, ranging from the CEO to my fellow interns. This inclusive environment fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas, creating a workplace culture where diverse perspectives are valued and contribute to the collective innovation of the team.

What are the limitations of your job?

Working closely with Emmies across different time zones introduces significant time constraints, given that there are limitations in maximizing our time for collaborative efforts. The challenge lies in overcoming asynchronous communication barriers, hindering real-time interaction. Despite these limitations, navigating such complexities cultivates essential skills in time management and adaptability. The job's learnings extend to mastering effective asynchronous communication strategies and leveraging diverse perspectives. Advantages emerge in the form of a resilient, globally inclusive work culture that fosters creativity and enhances organizational adaptability, providing a unique opportunity for professional growth in a dynamic and interconnected environment.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Seek a healthy balance - Find the balance in your life – not going all out on just one thing but making sure you've got a good mix of work, personal stuff, self-care, and fun. This is a friendly reminder not to let work take over everything. Sure, we gotta do our best and chase our goals, but there's more to life than just the daily grind. Take time for yourself, enjoy moments with friends and family, and don't lose sight of what makes life fulfilling.
  • You belong - If you weren't capable, the opportunity would have never come your way. You belong. you didn't just stumble into this. Someone, somewhere, saw something in you, believed in your skills and potential, and that's why you're here. You're not just here by accident; you're here because you've got what it takes. It's all about recognizing your own value and knowing that you've earned your spot.
  • You’ll be fine - Don’t sweat if you mess up. Mistakes happen, but some of the most amazing things in life come from our mistakes. Don’t freak out over mistakes but instead, see them as these little detours that could take you to unexpectedly beautiful places.
