At The University of Newcastle we are developing technology with the potential to reduce mining sector emissions by up to 90 per cent, reducing Australia's total national greenhouse gas inventory by up to 3 per cent. With $30 million in Government and industry funding, this world-first research project will deliver abatement technologies that address fugitive methane emissions from underground coal mines.

Senior Lecturer of Law, Dr Elena Aydos believes lasting solutions to climate change are possible, if we observe and learn from the actions of other countries across the globe. Through her research, she’s shown how implementing strategies like carbon pricing has had a positive impact in many other parts of the world. By understanding the enabling factors that led to progress, Elena hopes to help create effective climate change policy here in Australia. Using hemp to remove toxic chemicals from soil

Dr Brett Turner knows that PFAS chemical contamination is a dangerous problem, and a global one. That’s why Brett and his team are developing a groundbreaking new way to remove these contaminants from soil using all-natural hemp proteins. Over 40,000 sites worldwide have been polluted by PFAS. Brett is excited by the initial results of their work in Williamtown, where they were able to remove 99% of the contamination in the samples they tested.
